Last week marked a proud and unforgettable moment for the Thames Rockets team, as two of our own were formally honoured at a commendation ceremony held at the U.S. Embassy in Nine Elms, London. The ceremony recognised the heroic actions of Skipper Simon Dias and Guide Mark Pusey, who demonstrated extraordinary bravery during a rescue operation on the River Thames in May.

The event, attended by dignitaries, police officials, and guests from across London, aimed to shine a spotlight on individuals who have gone above and beyond in service, safety, and commitment to others. Simon and Mark were recognised for their quick thinking and professionalism in the face of a high-pressure situation on the river—actions that ultimately contributed to saving a life.

Celebrating Heroism at the U.S. Embassy in Nine Elms

The American Embassy in Nine Elms is the largest U.S. embassy in Western Europe and is an architectural landmark. Surrounded by tranquil gardens, the 65-metre-tall, 12-storey glass building features a distinctive ETFE-coated facade, also used in the UK's Eden Project bio-domes. Designed by architecture firm Kieran Timberlake, the building reflects themes of transparency, sustainability, and innovation. Solar panels and light-optimised glazing help reduce glare and regulate solar heat, making it a modern icon of eco-friendly design in London.

A Morning of Formal Recognition from Metropolitan Police Leadership

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove of the Metropolitan Police personally presented the commendation certificates to Simon and Mark during the ceremony. In his speech, he praised the duo for their calm under pressure, decisive action, and clear understanding of emergency response protocols—qualities that exemplify the best of community service and teamwork.

Their bravery took place onboard Rocket One, one of the high-speed vessels operated by Thames Rockets, renowned for delivering exciting sightseeing tours along the Thames, on trips such as The Ultimate London Adventure and Thames Barrier Explorers Voyage. This day was meant to be a day of adventure quickly turned serious, and thanks to the vigilance and skill of our team, a potential tragedy was averted.

A Ceremony Filled With Inspiration and Appreciation

The commendation ceremony began with a warm welcome and light refreshments, creating a comfortable space for attendees to gather and reflect on the importance of service, sacrifice, and community leadership. Multiple awards were presented throughout the morning, recognising a variety of outstanding achievements, from years of dedicated service to acts of courage and the development of new safety training modules.

Simon and Mark were among the first to be recognised, stepping up to the stage to heartfelt applause from friends, family, and colleagues. Their certificates were presented individually, underlining their personal contributions to the success of the mission. After receiving their awards, they rejoined the audience and listened intently to the other powerful stories being shared—each one a testament to resilience and service.

Honouring Our Heroes: Simon and Mark

The day was a celebration of gratitude for those who put others first. As the event concluded, attendees enjoyed a classic American-style lunch, complete with fresh sandwiches, coffee, tea, and a generous assortment of American doughnuts. The informal meal provided the perfect opportunity for award recipients and guests to connect, share stories, and celebrate the inspiring accomplishments of the day.

We at Thames Rockets are incredibly proud of Skipper Simon Dias and Guide Mark Pusey. Their calm leadership, swift decision-making, and adherence to health and safety procedures were instrumental in turning a dangerous moment into a successful rescue. Their actions exemplify the values we uphold as a team with professionalism, vigilance, and a strong sense of responsibility on the River Thames.

On behalf of everyone at Thames Rockets, we extend our deepest gratitude to Simon and Mark. Your bravery not only made a difference that day but also continues to inspire everyone who hears your story.

A Timely Reminder as We Head Into Summer

This recognition of Simon and Mark's bravery comes at a crucial time, as we enter the busy summer months on the River Thames. It’s a timely reminder that the river is not a playground, and that safety must always come first. Just yesterday, the Port of London Authority (PLA) launched their new campaign, “Stay Back, Stay Out, Stay Safe,” aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of swimming in uncharted and unpredictable waters like the Thames.

The campaign seeks to reduce the number of water-related incidents and accidental drownings, particularly among children and young people aged 9–16 living in communities near the river. Parents, guardians, and local residents are also encouraged to learn more about the risks and spread awareness within their communities.

We urge everyone to take a few minutes to watch the PLA’s powerful safety message on YouTube: Watch here. Let’s work together to ensure that the River Thames remains a place for safe enjoyment—not tragedy. Stay back, stay out, and stay safe.
